As Greg Kot pointed out on that show, Pendergrass could sing like a mofo on the faster numbers, too. This is from his '77 debut solo album, after he left Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes.
He was better known for slower tempo songs where he wrenched his heart and soul until they simply dripped off his vocals:
