Dennes Dale "D." Boon (born April 1, 1958 ) died on this day in 1985 at the age of 27, not from reckless drug use or suicide but random bad luck. Boon was one third of the influential and unique rock and roll trio The Minutemen. That day Boon, who had been sick with the flu, was laying down in the back of a van that his girlfriend was driving along route I-10 between Arizona and California. They were on the way to visit her family for the holidays. She fell asleep at the wheel, lost control of the vehicle and Boon was thrown out the back door breaking his neck. He died on impact. Speaking about what is was like to hear the news, in the We Jam Econo documentary, The Minutemen's drummer George Hurley said, "it's kind'a like having a hole where a heart was."
Twenty four years later D. Boon is still missed, still remembered and still continues to inspire through the music he helped make.
